Functionality behind the touch

Capacitive touch sensors work by noticing changes in electrical charge - made by a touch from a fingertip.

The detection of a touch changes the capacitance of the sensor electrode. This triggers a response from the device.

Building blocks of capacitive touch sensors

Printed capacitive touch sensors are made with thin, flexible polymer substrates like:

PET (Polyethylene terephthalate)
PC (Polycarbonate)
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane).

The sensors consist of several layers screen printed on the substrate base material. The layers often include conductive ink like PEDOT, silver or carbon, insulation layer, lacquers,, and graphic colors.
